[It would have been a million years before Lance ever defended Keith's name. Or so he thought. Yet, here he is, leaning against the kitchen counter with his arms crossed looking completely closed off, but it's more out of disbelief than throwing up walls. He knew James and Keith never got along; everybody knew that. They've only been at each other's throats since they were all pre-teens. But still, years have passed and things between Lance and Keith had matured into a mutual respecting friendship and after all Voltron has been through, he just couldn't stand there and let James pop off at the mouth about his teammate.

But at the same time, he didn't want to go to bed with this argument on his mind, still hanging in the air between him and James. He doesn't want to have to chose between his friend and his lover. He wants both in his life, for they're each an important part of it. But how can Lance tell James he can't be angry at someone who annoyed him for years?

That's something Lance will have to think about later, maybe when he's not making his way out of the kitchen to go find where James is. And to do what? Apologize? Demand an apology? Break up with James? One of those is a non-option.]

[ To say that James was annoyed was....a thing. He and Keith had gotten into another fight, this time more because both of them were too hotheaded and really brought out the competitive side in one another. And not the good kind. Instead of competing and helping one another to better themselves through said competition all they seemed to do was get angry and then never resolve it so it only festered into resentment.

But this was Lance. Of course he wasn't surprised that Lance had stepped up to defend his friend and former team leader. James would have done the same for any of his own. Still, it stung a bit and James was anything if not stubborn. At this point he was more angry at himself because...Lance was right. And he hated that.

Of course, instead of going into the kitchen and making an awkward apology....James just stood there in the living room...staring at the blank tc screen, glaring, with his arms crossed. He should do something, he didn't want this to be like his relationship with Keith. He didn't want something like this to fester and just make it worse. He liked being with Lance. He takes a bit to finally make up his mind and sighs, throwing his head back to look at the ceiling. ]

You're stupid, Griffin....

[ Muttering to himself her ran a hand through his bangs before finally making his way to the kitchen, leaning on the door frame to look at his boyfriend. He was upset, closed off, and James didn't blame him. Instead he just kept his eyes down, not staring at the other, and just cleared his throat to get Lance's attention. ]

[Lance knows all about being competitive to the point of being an absolute dumbass. While his rivalry with Keith was all about Lance's insecurity, he can't exactly tell what James' stems from. He should ask. Maybe. Maybe not. Perhaps asking would be taken the wrong way and make everything worse.

God, why is this so hard? This relationship thing. Lance has been flying by the seat of his pants with James and so far, so good. Until tonight. How does one tell his very first boyfriend that he doesn't want to lose him over a stupid ass fight?

Lance is startled into a slight jump at the sound of James clearing his throat, usually narrow eyes wide. James isn't looking at him and it worries him ever more now. He's expecting the worst, as per usual.]

Hey.

[A good start, he guesses. Something is better than nothing.]

[ James reaches up to scratch at his scalp, nerves making him feeling a little twitchy. ]

Hey.

[ It's more clipped than he means and he flinches. That wasn't how he wanted to start that. Still, he forces himself to look up at Lance. ]

Look...I...I know I can be really shitty when it comes to...certain people.

[ He takes a breath. ]

But...I'm--

[ Sorry...he's sorry! Why is it so hard to admit that he was wrong and to apologize. He groans, rubbing his face with both hands with an aggravated sound. Just like a band aid, come on Griffin you can do this. You have to. You could lose him.

That sudden realization and fear hits him like a bucket of ice water. ]

I'm sorry.

[Lance flinches too, hearing how the end of the word is bitten off. Now he's really not sure what to expect from James, whether he's going to walk out of this kitchen and out the door or something else. Would he beg James to stay or let him go?

But James starts talking and Lance just listens, giving James the decency of not staring directly in his eyes. What sounds like the start of an apology is coming out and Lance knows that things like this don't come easy to people like his boyfriend. After all, Keith is the same damn way.

Lance nods, sighing softly as he drops his arms to his sides, opening up his body language in the face of James trying, actually trying, to make amends.]

I'm sorry too. I shouldn't have yelled.

[He's not apologizing for defending Keith. If the tables were turned and Keith was standing here in this kitchen, Lance would have been defending James just as hard. Lance, however, is aware that his penchant for not checking his volume means sometimes his point flies right out the window and for that, he's truly repentant.]

No...I mean...it's fine.

[ James sighs and steps further into the kitchen, moving to lean on the island and fiddling with a bit of junk mail there. ]

I wasn't listening...I got too heated and just....wouldn't listen.

[ Even he could recognize when he was being an idiot...it just helped that his boyfriend wasn't afraid to point it out to him.
