[ Losing Veronica, getting away because of her sacrifice, it had weighed heavy on James since they left. Kinkade had been right to hold him back, but that didn't mean he had to like it. He was supposed to be a good leader and what good was he if one of his team had to get themselves killed protecting the others.

Sure James had been a little irritated at first but he wasn't one to go against orders and Veronica never gave him any reason to not agree with her.

So when she rode in with the cavalry like she did, he was overjoyed. It was relief that had him pushing through the crowd and making his way to her. Relief that had him pulling her into a one armed hug. But it was something else that made him freeze just minutely. Something he couldn't quite explain. ]

Good to have you back, McClain.

Griffin! [She smiles brightly, pleased to see him. She knew he must have been blaming himself this whole time. It's what she would have done, anyway, but she was their handler and it had been her mission.

He pulls her into a hug, a casual, brief one, but it's like a lightning strike. Something changes the instant he touches her, coursing through her entire body and making her blink at him like she's never seen him before.]

[ There's slight shock in his eyes as well, blue/grey locked onto her own before he nodded and smiled. The turn of his lip is a little strained but no less sincere. ]

We thought we lost you, the others'll be glad to see you back too.

[She studies his gaze, trying to determine if he felt it too, but honestly, Veronica doesn't actually know James too well. She's heard plenty, thanks to his being in Lance's class, but personally, not so much.]

[ He wants to say something, wants to ask her if she had felt it...and by the look she gives him he can only guess that she did. So he just decides to go for it. He leans forward and lowers his voice. ]

[ Closing his eyes a moment he nodded before rocking back and clapping Veronica on the shoulder. ]

[ Smiling a bit he managed to excuse himself and head away. Of course he's quick to find his way to Veronica's room an hour later.

He wasn't sure what to say, what to do. He had felt it too after all. Something he hadn't thought he'd get a chance to feel after the Galra attacked and sent their world into chaos. Still, here they were.

raising his hand to knock on the door, James waited...almost trying to convince himself that she wasn't there and that they had just imagined it and should leave.

[Veronica had lost track of time in the crush of people wanting to greet her. She chats and catches up with friends, introduces her family to some of the more crucial people here at the Garrison, and just generally plays diplomat. She's genuinely happy, of course, but her thoughts stay with James and that electrifying touch.

By the time she gets back to her room, she's running late. Just in time to spot Griffin hesitating at the door. Feeling nervous now, she clears her throat as he makes her way down the hall, giving him a small smile.]

James. Hi.

[ That. Wasn't where he had been expecting to hear her voice! He jumps and has to play it off as he moves to lean against the wall. Cool man, cool.

Who is he kidding this is Veronica. ]

Hey, they finally let you go?

[Okay, that's kind of adorable, and Veronica stifles a smile, not wanting to embarrass him.

You're the coolest, James.]

Yeah. Sorry that took so long. Um... [She chews her bottom lip and gestures awkwardly to her room.] Here, I'll let you in.

[She unlocks the door and pushes it open before backing up to let James in. Her room is neat and tidy as one might expect from an officer, with a framed photo of a large family on her desk.]

[ When she opens the door James easily walks in, looking around to get a feel for the place. Clean, crisp. A soldiers room. It wasn't unlike his bunk with the other MFE pilots.

After a bit of standing there he takes a few breaths before looking at Veronica. ]

[Have to be clean enough to pass inspection, of course. And honestly, it just feels better having a tidy room sometimes.

She awkwardly looks around, rubbing at her shoulders and biting her lip. At his question, Veronica looks back at James. She nods quietly, watching him. She's nervous, feeling almost vulnerable like this.]

[ James is watching her, taking in her reaction and...he's not much better if he's honest. His mind had been racing since he felt it. Still, it wasn't bad. Was it? ]

Well might have to ask for a new handler...don't think they'd be keen on us working together in a professional setting when it gets out....if it gets out?

[ He's offering her an out. He's too nervous to think but he knows that just because you found your soulmate didn't mean you ended up with that person. That being said, James was the last to explain, he was one of the many kids growing up who wondered what sort of person his would be, he'd all but given up hope when the Galra attacked. ]
